Independent Opera Company (IOC) is thrilled to present a double bill of Stabat Mater by Pergolesi and Orfeo ed Euridice by Gluck. Artistic Director Galina Barskaya notes, "When selecting these two works I was attracted by the beauty of the music; I also think these works have an important message for our times. Both talk about suffering and loss, but also about the transformative power of love, art and compassion."
Pergolesi's Stabat Mater (The Sorrowful Mother Was Standing) is set to one of the most beloved liturgical texts, telling the sad story of the Virgin Mary's suffering as she watches her beloved Son dying on the cross. IOC will perform this beautiful work oratorio style, with no staging. However, there will be some dancing at the beginning and the end. Orfeo ed Euridice by Gluck is based on one of the most popular Greek myths: Orfeo ed Euridice, in which Orfeo goes to the underworld to rescue his beloved wife. This is the first of Gluck's "reform" operas, in which he attempted to replace the abstruse plots and overly complex music of opera seria with a "noble simplicity" in both the music and the drama.
