Pacific Serenades celebrates Chamber Music Month with a world premiere for string quartet by composer Gernot Wolfgang. The program will also include works by Smetana and Haydn, performed by a quartet comprised of Roger Wilkie (violin), Connie Kupka (violin), Roland Kato (viola) and David Speltz (cello).

Born in Austria, Gernot Wolfgang currently resides in Los Angeles. He is a graduate of the Scoring Music for Film and TV at USC and holds degrees from Berklee College of Music and the University of Music in Graz, Austria. His concert works have been presented by LA Phil, the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra and many other ensembles and orchestras.

String Theory, Wolfgang’s new work for string quartet, will be the 109th commissioned by Pacific Serenades and will be performed by some of the most accomplished musicians in Southern California. As is customary with Pacific Serenades' programming, this evening of music will be an inspired juxtaposition of adventurous new work and loved classical selections. Other pieces to be performed include Smetana’s String Quartet #2 in D minor, and String Quartet in B minor by Franz Josef Haydn.

Family Affair: Bach and Sons at LA Chamber Orchest

Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra's (LACO) enlightening “Baroque Conversations” series showcasing exceptional Baroque gems concludes with a program of works by Bach and two of his sons on Thursday, May 9, 2013, 7 pm, at Zipper Hall in downtown Los Angeles. LACO Concertmaster Margaret Batjer leads the Orchestra from the first chair in all four works on the program and doubles as the violin soloist for the concluding work, Johann Sebastian Bach’s Violin Concerto No. 2 in E major, BWV 1042. A second JS Bach concerto, Oboe d’amore Concerto in A major (orig. Harpsichord Concerto No. 4), BWV 1055, features LACO Principal Oboe Allan Vogel. Also highlighted are the Sinfonia in D major, Op. 3, No. 1, by Bach’s 11th and youngest son, Johann Christian Bach, and the Sinfonia in D minor, “Adagio and Fugue,” FK 65, by his second son, Wilhelm Friedemann Bach.

Critics have called Batjer an “impressive,” “world class” violinist who plays with “panache…spirit and mastery.” Vogel has been hailed as “an aristocrat of his instrument” and “undoubtedly one of a few world masters.”

In addition to the performance, the event includes an engaging discussion by the artists of the program and audience questions. A complimentary wine reception for ticket holders begins at 6 pm. LACO’s “Baroque Conversations” explores the genesis of orchestral repertoire from early Baroque schools through the pre-classical period, this season spotlighting the musical legacy of JS Bach and his sons.

MARGARET BATJER has served as concertmaster of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra since 1998. Throughout her successful career as soloist, chamber musician, teacher and concertmaster, she has established herself as a versatile and respected artist worldwide. Batjer made her first solo appearance at the age of 15 with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO). She has since returned to the CSO and soloed with a succession of major orchestras, including The Philadelphia Orchestra and the St. Louis, Seattle and Dallas symphony orchestras. Batjer has performed with such European ensembles as the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Prague Chamber Orchestra and Berlin Symphony Orchestra. As an esteemed chamber musician, she appears regularly at the Marlboro Music Festival, La Jolla Summerfest, Salzburg Festival, and Italy’s Naples and Cremona festivals. In 2008, she developed LACO’s acclaimed chamber music series, Westside Connections. Among her many noteworthy recordings, Batjer has twice recorded Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins: for the Philips label with Salvatore Accardo and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, and in 2003, paired as soloist with Hilary Hahn for Deutsche Grammophon with Jeffrey Kahane conducting the LA Chamber Orchestra. Batjer is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music where she studied with Ivan Galamian and David Cerone. She joined the faculty of the USC Thornton School of Music in 2005.

Pacific Boychoir Presents Rachmaninoff’s Vespers

Grammy-award winning Pacific Boychoir of Oakland, California, presents Sergei Rachmaninoff’s All-Night Vigil (Vespers), Op. 37 on Friday, May 10, 2013, 8 pm at First Congregational Church of Los Angeles. Performed every three years in Oakland and San Francisco, this marks the first time in the Pacific Boychoir’s history that this piece is being performed in Los Angeles, in its entirety, with an all-male choir including boy sopranos and boy altos in outstanding acoustics. The masterpiece was first premiered by a boy’s choir in Moscow in 1915. In 2007, the Pacific Boychoir became the first choir in America to reproduce the original performing forces. Along with Daniel Babcock as tenor soloist, Los Angeles’ finest choral tenors and basses augment the choir.

"The last time we were in Los Angeles was in 2006 where we performed with Dmitri Hvorostovsky in an all-Russian language program at a sold-out Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. The Vespers, also in Russian, will be our first full-length concert here and we look forward to engaging Los Angeles choral audiences," exclaimed Pacific Boychoir Artistic Director Kevin Fox, who has been eager to bring this piece to Los Angeles.

The All-Night Vigil is an a cappella choral composition by Sergei Rachmaninoff; his Op. 37 was written and premiered in 1915. It consists of settings of texts taken from the Russian Orthodox All-night vigil ceremony. It has been praised as Rachmaninoff's finest achievement and "the greatest musical achievement of the Russian Orthodox Church".

Stewart Copeland, drummer/founder of the rock band The Police, elevates Poe's story of a meticulous murderer betrayed by his own paranoia. Michael Gordon, Bang on a Can co-founder, dives into the restless soul of the brilliant painter Van Gogh, revealing his world through the raw emotions of his personal letters. Both operas feature music at the edge of rock, jazz, and classical modernism.

Los Angeles Children’s Chorus Annual Spring Concer

The Los Angeles Children’s Chorus, considered one of the world’s leading children’s choirs, spotlights the music of Benjamin Britten at two performances of its annual Spring Concert on two consecutive Sundays, May 5 and 12 (Mother’s Day), 2013, 7 pm, at Pasadena Presbyterian Church. The renowned chorus, led by Artistic Director Anne Tomlinson, performs selected works from Britten’s Friday Afternoons, which Britten composed for school children, as well as various titles from his folk song arrangements, and selected movements from Ceremony of Carols, written for treble voices, solo voices and harp, and Missa Brevis, a beautiful work noted for its poignant plea for peace, which also illustrates Britten’s considerable skill at writing for children’s voices. The program is part of Britten 100/LA: A Celebration, a year-long festival honoring the 2013 centenary of the British composer curated by LA Opera.

Other featured works include Herbert Howells’ My Eyes for Beauty Pine, a piece in which Britten found inspiration, Handel’s aria Non lo diro from his early opera Tolomeo, two-time Oscar-winner Richard Sherman’s Hushabye Mountain from the film “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” and an arrangement of To Music by LACC Associate Artistic Director Mandy Brigham. Also on the program are Jean-Baptiste Lully’s rarely heard French Baroque piece Regina coeli, Sir David Willcocks’ Psalm 150, Canadian composer Surl Glick’s Psalm 23, Schubert’s compelling art song Du bist die Ruh, and the haunting Celtic folksong Óró Mo Bháidin. In addition, LACC presents Come Let’s Be Merry by American composer James Mulholland, William Brown’s Puisque tout passé, set to a poem by Rilke and featuring percussionist Robert Fernandez, the Newfoundland folksong The Star of Belle Isle, and the spirituals Ain’-a that Good News, My Lord What a Morning and The Storm is Passing Over.

Tomlinson conducts the chorus’ renowned Concert Choir and Chamber Singers. Brigham leads the Intermediate Choir, Diana Landis leads the Apprentice Choir, and Dr. Steve Kronauer conducts the Young Men’s Ensemble. The choirs will perform separately and combined.

Duane is the Co-Director of Worship and Arts at Lake Avenue Church, and performs often in the Pasadena area and in Washington State. The program will include works by Bach, Brahms, and arrangements of several hymntunes written by the artists. In particular, the Concerto in C minor by J.S. Bach, and Variations on a Theme of Haydn by Johannes Brahms will be performed. A guest appearance from vocal soloist Greg Waybright will be included as part of the program. The concert is free for everyone, and a free-will offering will be taken to benefit the refurbishing of Fischer Rehearsal Hall at Lake Avenue Church.

LA Chamber Orch Presents Cellist Alisa Weilerstein

Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra’s 44th season concludes with a flourish as Alisa Weilerstein, lauded by The New York Times as a "brilliant young American cellist," performs Shostakovich’s thrilling Cello Concerto No. 1 in E-flat major, Op. 107, originally composed for legendary cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, on Saturday, May 18, 2013, 8 pm, at the Alex Theatre in Glendale, and Sunday, May 19, 2013, 7 pm, at Royce Hall, UCLA. Music Director Jeffrey Kahane, who conducts the program and has long been committed to championing artists early in their careers, also presents the US premiere of up-and-coming French composer Hugo Gonzalez-Pioli’s The Love of Zero, an intriguing bassoon concerto, featuring LACO Principal Bassoon Kenneth Munday and played with Robert Florey’s avant-garde 1927 short silent film of the same title. Gonzalez-Pioli, whose work adds a touch of Hollywood to the program, is a 2012 graduate of USC’s prestigious Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television program. The program opens with Beethoven’s dramatic Coriolan Overture, Op. 62, and also includes Within Her Arms, “a fragile elegy for fifteen strings” (The New York Times) by Anna Clyne, described as “dazzlingly inventive” (Time Out New York).

Weilerstein, who has attracted attention worldwide for playing that combines a natural virtuosic command and technical precision with impassioned musicianship, was named a MacArthur “Genius” Grant recipient in 2011. The Los Angeles Times praised her "rich lyrical tone," and the Washington Post applauded a previous performance of the Shostakovich concerto as "magisterial."

Concert Preludes, pre-concert talks held one hour before curtain and free for ticket holders, provide insights into the music and artists. Composer Hugo Gonzalez-Pioli joins Jeffrey Kahane to discuss The Love of Zero.

Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra is considered one of the world’s premier chamber orchestras as well as a leader in presenting wide-ranging repertoire and adventurous commissions.
